What types of baccarat are there?

In addition to the differences in the name designation, which range from baccarat to baccarat, there are three game variations. The classic model is called Big Table Baccarat refer. In addition, the game types are Mini Baccarat and Midi Baccarat offer. They all follow the same game principle and actually differ only in the number of players, i.e. the seats to be taken at the table.

How is Baccarat played?

In baccarat, two players decide whether to compete against each other as a bank and as an opponent of the bank. Both pursue the same goal: two cards are used to try to get as close as possible to the sum of 9.

All other players who take a seat at the table bet their money either on the possible winner of the duel, or on a draw. At some tables, the possibility is also offered to bet on the fact that bankers or players will be dealt a pair as cards.

The other players thus participate “passively" in baccarat. You do not have to compete as a bank or bank opponent yourself. The number of passive participants can be up to 14 people. It is interesting to know that the passive players are not obliged to place their bet in each round of the game. On the contrary, you can also wait a few rounds and watch the game before placing your bet.

How are the card values calculated in baccarat?

In terms of card values and adding up the cards, baccarat is different from other card games. The ace simply counts, the numbers 2-9 each the printed number. Especially it will be from the number 10. Jack, queen, King and ten-card each have the value of 0!
We remember: the goal of baccarat is to get as close as possible to the number 9. Therefore, it makes no sense to keep a card with a higher value in the deck.

Since two cards are always dealt by the dealer, the visible values are added together. If the sum is greater than 9, the digit of ten is deducted . What this means, we show in a small example:

Get the numbers 5 and 6 if you came to the sum 11 . In this case, the digit of ten is subtracted, so it remains only the value 1 about. Another example: you get cards with the numbers 6 and 7, make a total of 13. After subtracting the digit of ten, the numerical value 3 remains.

The rules of baccarat in detail

If a banker or player receives a value of 8 or 9, this value is referred to as “ Naturel ”. If you have a Naturel in your hand, you have to reveal the cards directly. For all other sums, the cards remain invisible to the game participants on the hand.

If one of the two players now reveals his Naturel, the opponent must also show his cards. The higher value wins - if both have the same value in hand, the bet goes back to the players and the duel begins again.

”Hit“ and ”stand" – terms in baccarat

If neither player reaches a Naturel, a third card is dealt by the dealer. There are clear rules about when to get a third card and when not. These are specified as follows:

  • if you have a sum of 6 or 7 in your hand, you may not draw a card
  • if the total is 5, you can decide whether you want to draw another card or not
  • if the sum is less than 5, you are obliged to draw another card

It is therefore important that only when the sum of 5 is in your hand, you have the freedom to decide whether you want to have another card or not. The decision on this is indicated by the terms “hit” and “stand”. The player chooses the “ Hit song ”, he gets another card. In the case of a “ Stand ” he decides against another card from the card-puller.

It is important to know that many casinos take the decision at the sum of 5 for players and bankers. The game is tied to a typical rhythm, which runs automatically, except for a few points. How this works, we explain in the next point.

Why you hardly have to make decisions yourself in online Baccarat

The majority of online casinos offer the game Baccarat as a fully automated version. The participant decides exclusively on how high his stake is, as well as whether he takes a seat at the table as a passive or active participant.

According to the following rules, the automatic dealer evaluates the cards of the player and the banker (by the way, first the player's hand is evaluated, then the banker's):

Player

  • in a Naturel, the player's hand wins, unless the bank also has a Naturel
  • if you have a 6 or a 7 as a player, this leads to a Stand - the train is thus terminated
  • if the value of the hand is 5 or less, this leads to a Hit song - so another card is dealt by the dealer

Banker

  • at a value of 7 to 9, the turn is terminated
  • if the banker's hand is worth 6, the player's third card is looked at. If this is 6 or 7, another card is dealt to the banker
  • if the banker's hand is 5 and the player's third card was again in the range from 4 to 7, another card is dealt to the banker
  • if the banker comes to the sum of 4 and the player lies with his third card in the sum between 2 and 7, the banker is also dealt a third card by the dealer
  • if the banker has a 3 as a sum and the player gets a value of 0 to 7, including the third card, there is also a third card for the banker
  • if 2 or less than the sum of the banker's hand, the banker also gets a third card

The practical thing about this process, which at first glance may be a bit complicated to understand, is that all moves are fully automatic. You don't have to have those rules in mind either as a player or as a banker, because the process is always the same and is therefore taken over by the program.
Even in an online live casino with a real dealer, the decision about the moves is usually made by the dealer – only a few offer the free decision of the player.

Although one should also remember that only with the sum of 5 theoretically a free decision is possible at all.

How the online casinos proceed in each case in this point, you should simply read the rules of the game on the respective homepage before playing.

In what proportion are the bets paid out?

The payout options for the three betting options winners, losers and draws are as follows:

  • successful bets on the player are paid out in a ratio of 1:1
  • successful bets on the banker are also paid out in a 1:1 ratio, however, 5% of the profit goes to the house as a commission
  • in the event of a draw, most casinos pay in a ratio of 8:1, sometimes even 9:1

Based on the odds, it can be seen that the chance of a draw is quite unlikely. So, in principle, it is not worth betting on such an option.

What do James Bond and Baccarat have to do with each other?

In keeping with the elegant and partly elitist character of Baccarat due to its long history, there is a scene in the James Bond film “Dr. No” from 1962. Bond plays “Baccarat chemin de fer” here, which is nothing more than today's baccarat.

”Chemin de fer" is French and translates as railway. This refers to the passing around of the card slide, which changes the player in each round.

Of course, James Bond wins in this card game without batting an eyelid and, despite the highest stakes, presents himself as usual casually and unobtrusively. Just like a real, successful high roller.

Useful tips for Baccarat beginners

  1. The chance that the banker hand will win is always a bit higher. The banker sees how the player acts and therefore only has to react. According to statistics, the house edge is 1.24%.
  2. If you win when betting on the banker hand, you have to pay a 5% commission. This reduces the house edge to 1.06%.
  3. One should never bet on a draw. Even if the payouts are 8: 1 or even 9:1, the probability that this bet will succeed is far too small.
  4. Game systems such as Martingale and paroli can be used in baccarat. How they work and what effect they have can be read here.
  5. Basically, you should first participate in baccarat as a silent observer. Once you have understood the system, small bets are useful for the beginning. Also for the future you should avoid the very big bets, so as not to lose all your money too quickly.

The History of Baccarat

Baccarat looks back on a history of origin that probably goes back to the 16th century. The place of origin is said to have been the Italian Naples. The Neapolitan word baccara translates as zero. There are no really reliable investigations for the origin of the game. It is most likely that the game was created much later, probably sometime in the 19th century.

Regardless of the age of the game, there are records that the English King Edward VII already played baccarat.

There are parallels with various other gambling games. It is believed that the game Macao could be the predecessor of baccarat.
