The wheel of life is on the roulette table. But how do you play roulette and what are the differences between the European, French and American variants? We show what roulette rules there are and what you should pay attention to as a newcomer as well as an experienced player.

The goal of the game is simple: beat the house!

The basic game structure and procedure of roulette is simple for two reasons. Firstly, you should be able to bet and play immediately, without having to explain the rules for a long time beforehand. This is due to the second reason: the more people play, the higher the profit margin for the provider.

In addition, with roulette, theoretically, the largest winnings are possible even at the first play. In no other game does the risk depend so much on individual courage as in roulette.

What does the roulette game look like?

Whether you are a beginner or an expert: in roulette you have to orient yourself primarily on the turntable. This is colloquially called rad, the technical term is Kessel. Other parts of the roulette are the game ball, the betting field and the chips (game chips). As a player, you have the task of predicting in which number compartment of the turntable the ball will remain. As soon as the kettle has been pushed and the ball has been thrown in the opposite direction of rotation, you place your chips on the betting field. Here, the player has various options for placing the game chips: directly on a number, on the dividing lines between several numbers or on the boxes that stand for certain specified number combinations. Of course, you can also bet on the color.

The amount of the bet depends entirely on your own strategy. In the case of tables, there is a minimum and a maximum that can be set. Newcomers should not play the biggest bets at the beginning, so as not to put too much money on the game too early.

In real roulette, a croupier takes over the knocking of the kettle and the ball, in online roulette this step is carried out by a random number generator. Unless, of course, you're playing with a live dealer. In this type of game, you will be connected to a real croupier at a real table via a live stream from the comfort of your home. As soon as you are allowed to place your bet, the croupier releases the playing field with “Make your bets”. Shortly before the ball remains in a field, the croupier ends the betting opportunity with the words “No more bets please”, also known from the French “Rien ne va plus”.

Where does roulette come from?

It is often falsely claimed that the French mathematician Blaise Pascal invented roulette. This circumstance comes about as follows: Pascal is one of the most famous pioneers of probability calculation and also wrote two kinds of writings that bore the word “roulette” in their title. However, this does not mean the roulette as we know it, but the so-called “cycloid”. Cycloids are used to denote mathematical calculations of repeating curve shapes. Why Pascal called this cyclodie with the term roulette is not known. Which could also contribute to the misconception that Pascal invented roulette: Blaise Pascal invented a calculating machine that could be used to add and subtract six-digit numbers. This, in combination with his mathematical treatises, may have supported the myth that he was the inventor of roulette.

It is likely that roulette as we know it today was invented in Italy in the 17th century, before it appeared in France in the 18th century.

What roulette strategies are there?

Roulette is a classic game of chance. Since it does not depend on skill or knowledge, but only on probabilities, it is difficult to develop a really effective strategy in roulette. Because, as always with probabilities, the frequency of playing in the end determines how evenly profit and loss are distributed.

It is important to know that there is no sure win in roulette. This has been proven mathematically several times. Also, in the course of various experiments, a wide variety of strategies were tried, but none prevailed as reliable.

Nevertheless, with certain precautions, predictable successes can be achieved. First and foremost, it is important to keep your losses as small as possible. In the end, it is the case with the online as well as with the real version that roulette primarily allows the bank, the house or the provider a secure profit margin.

What roulette strategies are there and how to keep an eye on your bet, we have listed and briefly explained below:

  1. Paroli: Probably the simplest strategy is called paroli. The origin of this strategy goes back to the 17th century and has also established itself in the German language as an idiom: “To stand up to someone”. Basically, the paroli system is structured in such a way that you increase your winning bet by the same amount of profit at the next game. The opposite is the case if you lose - then the bet is reduced at the next roulette game. The purpose of this strategy, also known as the “positive progression betting system”, is that a lucky streak should be extended and the loss in a losing streak should be reduced.

Since you bet the amount you won, classically on the same field as before, you are betting the bank's money and not your own. This will reduce the risk of a large loss. You only play with the money you win. However, caution should be exercised: this system only makes sense if you win. Because otherwise you logically have no money that you can put on the same field again.

  1. The most widely used in roulette is the Martingale system. With this strategy, as soon as you lose, you increase by twice the previous bet. The goal of this negative progression betting system is very simple: you want to compensate for the loss of before as much as possible. The strategy is also known as “double or nothing”. The dangers of this system are obvious. If you lose again, you would have to bet twice the previous bet again to get out again at “zero”. For example, you bet $2 on a color and you lose. After Martingale, you now bet $ 4 on the same color. If you lost again, $8 would be due in the next game. Despite the risk of a losing streak, the Martingale system is used very often, also because it guarantees the greatest tension. According to the logic of the equal distribution, the more often you bet on the same field, you would have to win at some point from a mathematical point of view.
  2. A variation of the Martingale system is called the Alembert strategy. However, this so-called negative progression betting system does not increase by twice, but by a unit previously determined individually by the player. In this system, a chance is played until you lose. As soon as you have lost once, you then bet twice the unit. The goal is to bet until you get back to the piece of unity that you set at the beginning. If this point is reached, which can take quite a while, you have made a profit in the end.

By using flatter units, the profit per game is reduced on the one hand, but the loss is also minimized. Therefore, this strategy is especially suitable for beginners in the roulette game, who do not want to lose the fun of the thing due to a series of losses. Here are the important strategies on the market.

The classic structure of roulette

The boiler, also simply called a wheel or turntable, has 37 or 38 fields, depending on the design. The American roulette is provided with 38 fields, because there is a “double zero” there. In short, American roulette carries a greater risk of losing your bet. The European roulette logically has only a simple “zero” field with 37 fields. In terms of numbers, the house edge is 5.26% in the American model, only 2.7% in European roulette. Those who want to minimize the risk, of course, rely on the European model with only one zero field.

Regardless of the model, the fields are numbered and marked alternately in two colors. The bets are placed while the wheel is spinning and as soon as the cue ball has been inserted. As soon as the ball stops, the well-known “Rien ne va plus” (translated: Nothing works anymore) applies. In other words, no more bets may be placed.

What do you bet on at roulette?

It is very easy to decide what to bet on in roulette. In the end, it depends on the field in which the inserted game ball remains. However, so that you can not only bet on individual fields and the fun of the game is as high as possible, there are various ways to place your bet. Only if you really understand the betting variants, you can make a bet with which the potential profit opportunities can be increased.

Basically, the betting options are divided into simple and multiple odds. Both are best represented in a simple table.

Easy chance

In the simple betting chance, you only bet on one chance. The numbers of the boiler are distributed in three different fields. In turn, there are 18 fields in each individual category. The payout for simple odds is always 1:1. This means that the win is the same amount that you have bet. In short: if you win, you double the bet.

Bet Name Description Outcome/Payout Chance
"Red Black” Red or black numbers 1:1 48,6 %
"Low numbers” Box 1 to 18 1:1 48,6 %
"High numbers” Box 19 to 36 1:1 48,6 %
"Even Odd” Even (Even) or Odd (Odd) 1:1 48,6 %

Multiple chances

The multiple chance system offers more excitement than with the simple betting chance. Based on the multiple betting possibility, you can increase the potential payout rate and additionally use various strategies.

Bet Name Description Outcome/Payout Chance
"Straight” exact number from 0-36 35:1 2,7 %
“Split” two adjacent numbers 17:1 5,4 %
“Street” three numbers of a cross row 11:1 8,1 %
"First Four” the numbers 0,1,2,3 8:1 10,8 %
”Corner" four adjacent numbers 8:1 10,8 %
"Six Line” two adjacent transverse rows 5:1 16,2 %
"1st Dozen” Numbers 1-12 2:1 32,4 %
"2nd Dozen” Numbers 13-24 2:1 32,4 %
"3rd Dozen” Numbers 25-36 2:1 32,4 %
"Column” one of the three lines “2 to 1” 2:1 32,4 %

American, French European roulette variants at a glance

What sounds like a consideration for a culinary dinner, denotes the expression of the different roulette variants. So that no confusion arises, we will show here what they differ fundamentally.

American Roulette

The ”double zero" in American roulette is considered evidence that the Americans are particularly greedy. Because of the fact that there are two fields in which the house wins, of course, the risk also increases for each player. The fact is that it was not the Americans who established the second zero on the boiler in order to make more profit. It is rather true that the second zero has been removed in European and French roulette.

By the way: the removal of the second zero in European and French roulette had the sense that the house edge should be reduced. The aim was to become more competitive with the American suppliers.

The American Roulette Wheel

The arrangement of numbers in the European and French models is completely random. In the American model, however, there is a certain uniformity in the arrangement of the numbers.

Neighboring numbers are directly opposite each other in the American boiler. The 00 is therefore opposite the 0, the 27 is opposite the 26, etc. In addition, there is another series of numbers placed according to a certain system. If you go four fields further to the left from the number 1, you will find the odd number of the next pair of numbers (i.e. 3,5,7,9). Due to the, at first glance, even distribution of numbers in the cauldron, some system players prefer the American variant. However, it could not be proven that certain strategies can really be proved by the uniform arrangement, let alone crowned with lasting success.

European and French Roulette

These two roulette variants have the same structure of boiler and playing field. only the language and the designation of opportunities differ. Therefore, you can describe both variants together.

As already mentioned, as a simple chance or multiple chance, you place your bets as soon as the ball has been thrown into the cauldron. The numbers on the wheel are alternately red and black, in addition, the distribution of the numbers is chosen so that as few of the easy chances as possible are next to each other.

Which roulette and which strategy is suitable for me?

What you have to look for in roulette, we have listed here. As a piece of advice for players who have never played roulette: never start with too high stakes! Even if you are sure that you have the best strategy, you should always start in peace. And small amounts are best suited for a relaxed introduction to the way of playing roulette.

Should a losing streak occur, this is no problem. In such cases, it is advisable not to force luck and play until you win something again. It is better if you stop betting on roulette for a short time. By the way, the same applies to the winning series. You should not be blinded by this and stop in time before you completely gamble away your winnings.
